The Case of the Buttock-Biting Barrister
When Ted spotted Susie in a bar near the university, he was so overcome by her charms that he grabbed her by the hips and gave her a bite on the backside. “I meant it as a compliment,” Ted claimed. As a lawyer, he should have known better. Ted soon found himself on the receiving end of a lawsuit.
The amorous bite, said Susie’s attorney, broke the skin on her buttocks and caused “searing and throbbing pain.” Susie couldn’t even attend classes—she couldn’t sit down for three days.
Ted admitted to nipping the victim, but he insisted he meant her no harm. He had already tried the technique on two other women at fraternity parties, and neither of them took him to court. This time, however, the victim bit back. While Ted and his lawyer felt that Susie deserved only the $9 she spent on medication, the jurors awarded her $27,500 in damages.
