Lexington, IL (June 29, 2026) – A person was found trapped and in and out of consciousness on Friday afternoon, June 26, after a multi-vehicle crash involving several commercial trucks and a passenger vehicle on I-55 in Lexington.

The person in the passenger vehicle was reported bleeding and trapped following the crash. Multiple fire and ambulance units responded, including mutual aid from another town.

Authorities did not confirm any additional information about the severity of the injuries or the identities of those involved in the initial accident report. The investigation is ongoing.

We hope the person hurt makes a full recovery.

Who Is Liable in a Crash Involving Multiple Commercial Trucks in Illinois?

Determining liability in a collision involving multiple commercial trucks and a passenger vehicle often requires a much more extensive investigation than a typical traffic accident. When several commercial vehicles are involved, investigators must examine not only what each driver did in the moments before impact but also how the sequence of events developed across multiple vehicles.

As part of that analysis, attention frequently turns to the safety obligations imposed on trucking companies and their drivers. Under Illinois law, motor carriers are expected to ensure compliance with federal regulations governing matters such as following distances, vehicle maintenance, cargo safety, and hours-of-service limits. If one or more drivers violated these requirements, there may be a basis for liability against the responsible trucking company or companies.

To determine whether those violations occurred, investigators rely heavily on evidence unique to commercial vehicles. Data from electronic logging devices, event data recorders, driver logbooks, inspection reports, and maintenance histories can provide valuable insight into speed, braking activity, driving hours, and vehicle condition before the crash.

However, obtaining that information can become more complicated when multiple trucking companies are involved. Because these records are controlled by separate businesses and may be subject to retention policies that allow them to be deleted or overwritten after a relatively short period of time, acting quickly to preserve evidence across all involved commercial vehicles is often essential.

For that reason, identifying every potentially responsible commercial entity can be just as important as determining which driver made the initial mistake. Multiple trucking companies, contractors, maintenance providers, or other businesses may each bear some degree of responsibility, and each may have separate insurance coverage that could become relevant to an injury claim.

An attorney may be able to help the injured person send formal legal hold notices to each trucking company involved, investigate the actions of each commercial driver, and ensure that any resolution reflects the full scope of the injuries, financial losses, and long-term consequences resulting from the collision.
