Pain Relief is Available

After serious accidents, injuries, surgeries, conditions, or illnesses, many suffer from pain that ranges from minor to severe. Bone fractures and degeneration, sometimes coupled with nerve and tissue damage, result in the need for orthopedic surgery and neurologic attention. We see clients who suffer severe pain that they can no longer even sit or sleep without discomfort. Back, spine, and neck pain are common and can be overwhelming. Please know that there are a variety of treatments that can help relieve pain.

With over 25 years of handling personal injury cases, workers' compensation claims, wrongful death and social security disability appeals and cases in Bloomington-Normal, McLean County, and throughout Central Illinois, we have seen significant advances in medical care, specifically in the application of interventional pain strategies.  In addition to physical therapy, which is almost always recommended, appreciated pain interventions include:

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell Therapies—These regenerative medicine techniques use one's platelets (PRP) and cells to promote healing and repair. Many are drawn to this exciting field of medicine because it utilizes the body's natural healing mechanisms to achieve positive outcomes.

Spinal and Peripheral Nerve Blocks inject an anesthetic near nerves to block pain signals. Other procedures, such as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), use radio waves to destroy or block pain-transmitting nerves. An intercept procedure is a specific type of RFA that targets the basivertebral nerve, which may cause lower back pain.  Sympathetic nerve interventions are becoming more popular based on results from pain sufferers.

Intrathecal Pump and Spinal Cord Stimulator Implantation are methods to manage chronic pain that can work to place medication into targeted areas (intrathecal pump) and to block pain using electrical signals to block pain (spinal cord stimulation).

Epidural Steroid injections work to reduce inflammation and open up passages to provide pain relief. They are strong anti-inflammatory medications that often provide quick relief from pain caused by herniated disks, slipped vertebrae, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and many other pains in the back, neck, arms, legs, and throughout the body.

Cervical, thoracic, and lumbar facet injections target the small joints between the vertebra in the spine in either the neck (cervical), middle back (thoracic), or lower back (lumbar) to reduce inflammation and prompt pain relief. Facet joints are also called zygapophysial, zygapophyseal, apophyseal, or Z-joints.

Vertiflex Procedure places an implant between the vertebrae to create and maintain space for the nerves in the spinal canal.

Trigger point injections are used to relieve painful trigger points in your muscles that may feel like a knot, nodule, or bump. These may form after injury or repetitive micro-trauma. Targeted corticosteroids or even Botox injections may offer significant relief.

Viscosupplementation, hyaluronic acid, or HA injections place a gel-like lubricant in larger joints such as the knee, hip, or shoulder to reduce pain and improve joint function. Cortisone shots are often used and tend to provide faster pain relief; however, the benefits are not as long-lasting as HA injections.

Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Fusion can offer relief when other less invasive techniques are ineffective. It involves fusing the hip bone to the lower part of the spine to improve stability and reduce pain.

Vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, and sacroplasty are surgical procedures that use bone cement and, in the case of kyphoplasty, an inflatable bone tamp to repair and improve function.

Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression, or the Mild Procedure, is a minor surgery used to treat lumbar spinal stenosis. It's typically an outpatient procedure that reduces compression on the spinal nerves.

Comprehensive pain medicine management today goes beyond NSAIDS, opioids, and muscle relaxants to include the strategic use of anti-anxiety medications, antidepressants, sleep medications, steroids, and neuropathic pain medications to offer relief. These may be used with physical therapy and other interventional pain management procedures.

Personal Injury Treatment Tips

Always keep physician appointments. If you cannot make it, contact their office and reschedule. Avoid having a no-show on your official health record, as this may reflect poorly on your case.

Advanced testing, such as MRIs, will be helpful diagnostic tools. If these are recommended, schedule them as soon as possible, as they are important diagnostic tools.

If you are referred to other providers or specialists, please take this recommendation seriously and follow up. Many providers and new interventions are available that may help you live your best life.

If physical therapy is recommended, make as many appointments as needed and follow through on all sessions. Therapy may be executed with both in-patient and home-based exercises. Do the best you can to follow all the instructions provided.

Never ignore bills; bring them into our office for review and instruction. Don't be alarmed if the instruction includes submitting bills to your insurance provider, as this may be part of the formal process to ensure you will receive complete compensation.

Keep in touch with us as your treatment progresses and let us know if you've had any setbacks or improvements. Also, if you have any updates on contact information, such as a new address or phone number, please let us know immediately.
